Karera Sakunami

Also known as: Karera

Karera Sakunami is a con-woman Stand user in JoJolion whose Love Love Deluxe grows and controls other people's hair. An old classmate-stalker of Josefumi Kujo, she mistakes the amnesiac Josuke for him in JJL Chapters 43-46 — and her flashbacks deliver some of the Part's most important evidence about the night Josefumi and Kira became one person.
The Saga

Story

JoJolion — Love Love Deluxe

Part 8 · 2011-2012

Karera enters JoJolion sideways: in JJL Chapter 43 she spots Josuke on the street and greets him as *Josefumi* — the T Academy student she once shadowed with an unrequited crush. What follows (Ch. 43-46) is half grift, half revelation. A serial scammer living out of other people's wallets, she runs cons on a yakitori vendor and a taxi driver with Josuke in tow, grows hair on a stolen ATM card's screen to fish out cash, and all the while insists his face belongs to a boy named Josefumi Kujo — testimony that cracks open the Part's central mystery of who "Josuke" actually is.

Her own history explains the hiding. Flashbacks (Ch. 51-53) show that on August 19, 2011 at Morioh harbor, Yoshikage Kira planted Sheer Heart Attack in her hair as a diversion against Tamaki Damo and Yotsuyu's Rock Humans; she escaped unharmed but spent the next six months underground, hunted by the A. Phex Brothers. When the brothers finally corner her and Josuke, she abandons him — then turns back out of guilt, ignites the older brother with hair grown into his lighter's spark, and vanishes again after telling Josuke she can sense the "equivalent exchange" Kira's body made with his. She survives the Part, last mentioned still in hiding.

In-Depth Analysis

The Witness Who Knew the Face

JoJolion's central question is *who is Josuke?* — and Karera is the first person in the Part to answer any piece of it from lived memory. She recognizes the face instantly and names it: Josefumi Kujo. She isn't guessing; she spent her school years orbiting the boy at T Academy. Her chapters convert Josuke's identity from metaphysical puzzle to missing-persons case, and the flashbacks tied to her (Ch. 51-53) place Kira, Josefumi, Damo, and Yotsuyu together at Morioh harbor on the dated night the two boys became one body.

Her exit line is the arc's thesis stated by a bystander: she tells Josuke she can *feel* that an equivalent exchange took place in him. The series' most important secret is casually diagnosed by a woman fishing banknotes out of an ATM with hair — JoJolion's habit of hiding load-bearing revelations inside grubby, small-stakes episodes at its purest.

A Grifter's Economy of Survival

The Love Love Deluxe chapters double as a portrait of underclass Morioh. Karera is about twenty, unemployed, estranged from her family, and living hand-to-mouth through micro-cons: hair regrowth for balding men at cash rates, dine-and-dash schemes, a stolen card milked through a machine's screen. Araki plays her scams for comedy, but the engine underneath is fear — she has been in hiding for six months from killers she cannot name to any authority.

That context reframes the grifting. Every con is a woman staying liquid and mobile because stopping means being found. When she abandons Josuke to the A. Phex Brothers mid-fight, it is the survival reflex of half a year underground; when she comes back anyway, it is the first non-transactional thing the Part shows her doing. Her one act of violence — igniting a killer with his own lighter — is also her one act of loyalty.

August 19, 2011: The Harbor Diversion

Karera's flashback material is JoJolion's Rosetta stone. On the night the Part's backstory pivots — Kira and Josefumi's operation against the Rock Humans at Morioh harbor — Kira planted Sheer Heart Attack in Karera's hair without her knowledge, using the oblivious girl as a mobile bomb to divert Tamaki Damo and Yotsuyu. She walked away physically unharmed and existentially marked: the Rock Humans' organization spent the next six months hunting the loose end.

The detail is quietly brutal about Kira's character — Part 8's Kira is a *protective* figure in the Josefumi story, yet his tradecraft casually spends a bystander as ordnance. Karera is the cost of the harbor plan that nobody mourns, and her half-year of hiding is the Part's longest-running consequence carried entirely by a side character.

Yukako's Mirror in a Rebooted Morioh

JoJolion systematically re-casts Part 4's Morioh archetypes into its alternate universe, and Karera is the Yukako Yamagishi slot run through a fun-house mirror: the hair Stand, the romantic fixation, even the styling. But where Yukako's obsession was operatic — kidnapping, bleach, cliff-side melodrama — Karera's is anticlimactic by design: she stalked a boy she never once spoke to, and the closest she gets to him is his face on someone else's body.

The inversion extends to the power itself. Yukako's Love Deluxe weaponized *her own* hair — passion projected outward. Karera's Love Love Deluxe only manipulates *other people's* hair — a parasite's version of the same gift, befitting a woman who lives entirely off other people's resources. It is one of Araki's neatest examples of a reboot restating a character as economic critique.

Powers & Abilities

Love Love Deluxe

Stand

Love Love Deluxe grows and manipulates other people's hair — on their heads, and on anything they have touched: a skewer of yakitori, an ATM's LCD screen, a lighter. The reach-through-touched-objects clause turns everyday residue into her medium; hair erupts wherever her target's fingerprints have been.

Karera's uses are almost entirely economic. She grows hair on balding men for cash, fishes valuables out of machines, and improvises weapons only under pursuit — the ignition of the elder A. Phex brother via his own lighter being her one decisive kill-assist. As Stand kits go it is modest; as a portrait of a survival-mode grifter, it is perfectly cast.

Adaptation

Manga vs Anime

JoJolion has no anime adaptation yet, so Karera exists only in the manga — no voice actress, no game appearance, not even a cameo in *Eyes of Heaven*'s Part 8 stage. She is among the JoJodle roster's purest manga-only answers.

Her chapters are a frequent fan pick for "most anticipated JoJolion episode to animate": the con-artist comedy, the staggering gait built for animation, and the A. Phex fight's lighter ignition are all storyboard-ready — and her flashbacks carry the Part's most important dated evidence, guaranteeing the eventual adaptation cannot skip her.

In print she appears in JJL Chapters 43-46 with flashbacks in 51-53 and 55, plus mentions through the final chapter — a compact footprint for a character fandom wikis consistently rank among JoJolion's most memorable one-arc figures.

Did You Know

Trivia

  • Her look and power deliberately echo Yukako Yamagishi — Giorno-like curled bangs, a hair Stand, and an unrequited-crush storyline — one of JoJolion's many Part 4 mirror-images.
  • She never actually met Josefumi or Kira face to face — her crush was conducted entirely by stalking, which is exactly why her testimony about Josefumi's face is reliable.
  • Her signature animation-ready quirk is a staggering, about-to-fall-sideways gait; Araki draws her perpetually off balance, a con artist even against gravity.
People Also Ask

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Karera Sakunami?

Karera is a con-woman Stand user in JoJolion (JJL Chapters 43-46, flashbacks in 51-53). Her Love Love Deluxe grows and controls other people's hair. A former classmate-stalker of Josefumi Kujo, she mistakes the amnesiac Josuke for him — testimony that helps unlock the Part's identity mystery.

Is Karera Sakunami a Stand user?

Yes — her Stand is Love Love Deluxe, which grows and controls other people's hair, both on their heads and on objects they've touched (a skewer, an ATM screen, a lighter). She mostly uses it for petty cons, and once decisively in combat against the A. Phex Brothers.

What is Karera's relationship to Josefumi Kujo?

An unrequited, one-sided crush: she stalked Josefumi during their T Academy days but never formally met him. That distance is what makes her testimony matter — she knew his face well enough to recognize it instantly on the amnesiac Josuke in JJL Chapter 43.

Why was Karera in hiding in JoJolion?

On August 19, 2011, Kira planted Sheer Heart Attack in her hair as an unwitting diversion against the Rock Humans Damo and Yotsuyu at Morioh harbor. She escaped unharmed, but the organization hunted her for six months — the A. Phex Brothers finally catch up in JJL Chapter 46.

Does Karera Sakunami die?

No. After helping defeat the A. Phex Brothers, she departs — telling Josuke she can sense the "equivalent exchange" within him — and is last referenced still in hiding as of JoJolion's final chapter. Her ultimate fate is left open.

Is Karera related to Yukako from Part 4?

Not by blood — by design. JoJolion is an alternate universe, and Karera mirrors Yukako Yamagishi deliberately: similar styling, a hair-controlling Stand (Love Love Deluxe vs. Love Deluxe), and a one-sided romantic fixation — inverted from grand obsession into small-time survival.
