His pre-arc biography is depicted across JoJolion's middle-act memory-recovery sequences — Josefumi spent his late teens and early twenties working alongside Rai Mamezuku (a fruit-grower's apprentice) and developing a personal relationship with Kaato Higashikata, the Higashikata family's reclusive matriarch.
His investigation of the Higashikata family's healing-fruit smuggling operation across late 2010 and early 2011 was the structural reason his fusion with the alt-universe Yoshikage Kira happened.
